Unreal Engine, A Big Step for the Design and Production of Music Videos!

In recent years, Computer-Generated Imagery, better known as CGI has shown revolutionary improvements in all kinds of fields. An untrained human eye cannot even distinguish between what’s real and what’s fake in these works of art. Apart from being used in movies and TV shows, Music artists have also taken advantage of this groundbreaking technology by integrating it into their Music Videos.

Among the major names in CGI technology, an emerging player these days is Unreal Engine. While originally developed by Epic Games Inc. for video games in the late 1990s, it has advanced quite a lot, with its 5th iteration that just came out in May 2020. Some famous videogame titles that are based on Unreal Engine are Fortnite, Street Fighter V, Borderlands 3, and many others.

The exciting part is that the platform has recently found use in film making and TV industry. Top titles such as ‘The Mandalorian’ and ‘Westworld’ used the unreal engine technology to make 3D models of the film sets. The innovative platform even allows for real-time editing and changing the virtual set. It also offers an array of benefits from programming, to design capabilities and rendering. The best part of all is that Unreal Engine is available free as of 2015 for commercial uses as well. With such an amazing tool for film and video making available, physical sets might actually become a thing of the past. We can only predict that the next stop for such a platform is inevitably in 3D design and production of music videos.

Big-name music artists set apart a huge chunk of their budgets for the design and production of music videos. It takes a lot of time, labor, and hard work to create such masterpieces. Some worth mentioning videos are ‘Humble by Kendrick Lamar (2017)’, ‘Elastic Heart by Sia (2015), and countless others. They are true works of art. However, considering the amount of work, time, money that goes into them, making something similar with help of the Unreal Engine platform sounds like a bargain in comparison.

Of course, with Japan being a major influencer in the video gaming world, their art style and some cultural elements were bound to spread with this global gaming phenomenon. Many games and electronic media from Japan were created in Japanese manga and anime art styles. This became very popular internationally and the art style is even more popular today with newer and interesting storylines. The characters in Japanese art display unique elements and are greatly detailed which gives the viewer a full story about the nature of that character.

If you take interest in Unreal Engine technology or are a fan of artistic music videos, we at Blunt Action have increasingly been incorporating it into our workflow. Being a digital company, the platform offers assistance in our projects. Two of our projects are “CloZee – Heya” (Neon Jungle Music Video) and “D Smoke - Let Go And Black Habits” (Stage Visuals). However, more projects are underway. Feel free to check them out.
